Delight in Difficulties

Delight in Difficulties

Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, and in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong. 2 Corinthians 12:10 NIV (Delight in Difficulties)

The apostle Paul encouraged the church to delight in difficulties. When we delight in difficulties, we demonstrate the unshakable faith of those who completely trust in God. It does not matter what the enemy throws our way. With God, we are strong enough to survive and even to thrive.

In his second letter to the Corinthians, Paul wrote about pleading for the Lord to remove the thorn from his side. Instead of getting what he wanted, Paul reported the Lord’s reply in 2 Corinthians 12:9 writing, “He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me. WEB” When we are weak, we can rely fully on the strength of God.

Rely on the Lord

Human nature makes it hard to find delight in difficulties or find pleasure in times of trouble and weakness. Like Paul, we can feel our deepest connection to the power of God when we are weakened and afflicted because these circumstances compel us to rely on the Lord rather than ourselves or anyone else.

But there is more to it than that. The verse contains the modifying phrase “for Christ’s sake.” When we are insulted because we love the Lord, when we suffer hardship, difficulty and persecution because of our faith, we are content because we know the love of Jesus Christ and the eternal reward we receive through faith in Christ.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for providing the strength of faith when I am weak. You are my strength and hope in times of trouble. Lead me in your will and understanding of your word. In Jesus’ name – Amen.”
