My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Psalm 84:2 NIV
This is a passionate statement from the psalmist. In it, we can feel the strong desire for the writer’s connection with the Lord. It is not clear who wrote this Psalm, but it is relatable to believers for its clear enthusiasm for seeking God. The word of God is comfort to the grieving, the sick, and the afflicted of all sorts who cry out for the living God.
In this scripture, the soul likely refers to the spiritual aspect of a man. The heart is connected to the expression of emotion and the flesh is the body. We need God in all of these aspects. As pilgrims on a journey to eternity, we will experience spiritual low points, bodily injury and disease as well as emotional pain. When these things occur, the believer seeks comfort from the most reliable source, God himself.
In God’s Presence
In God’s presence, our troubles fall away, and our hope is fulfilled. When we are separated from him because of worldly lives and sin, our hearts and souls long to return to him. When sick, we yearn for healing and restoration and cry out for the Living God. In turn, when we cry out for the Living God, he hears us and is always there to guide us and provide comfort.
His Grace Is Sufficient
Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 12:9-11, “He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me. Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, and in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong. I have become foolish in boasting. You compelled me, for I ought to have been commended by you, for I am in no way inferior to the very best apostles, though I am nothing. WEB”
This is relatable to the psalm we consider today. No matter what the circumstance, seeking God and relying on the Lord in all things, we receive comfort while on our way through this corruptible world.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your holy word. My heart longs for you. My desire is to be in your presence always. Search my heart for anything that displeases you and bring it to me awareness so I can live according to your will. Forgive me for my offenses as I forgive those who have offended me. Bless me with your presence all the days of my life here on earth and in eternity with you. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
