For our citizenship is in heaven, from where we also wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, Philippians 3:20 WEB
In this life on earth, we have good times and bad. In our relationships there are ups and downs. But as Christians we live for a promise that comes from God through Jesus Christ. We live to serve the Lord’s purpose that we will receive eternal life and citizenship in heaven hereafter. We are citizens of towns, cities, states and countries but truly we are citizens of God’s heavenly kingdom.
At Home with God
In his letter to the Philippians, Paul asserts that our homeland is in heaven. Christ teaches the same in John 15:19 saying, “If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. WEB” We have been called out of the world to be citizens of the kingdom of heaven.
Just like here on earth, lawful behavior is important for those who possess citizenship in heaven. We have certain rules and obligations to the kingdom. We are to live in obedience to the will of God. The best example of how to live a Godly life is Jesus Christ. When we live in service and duty to God and our fellow man, we fulfill our responsibility of good citizenship in heaven.
Focus on Christ
As Christians given citizenship in heaven, we do not focus on the temporary things of earth, but our focus is on Christ and fulfilling the will of our heavenly Father. Selfishness, greed, and sin fall away as we seek to do the things that please God. While we are here on earth, our responsibility to the kingdom is to spread the word of God, sharing the good news of Christ while we wait for the return of our Savior.
Prayer: “Father God, praise your holy name. Guide me to do your will while waiting patiently for the return of Jesus Christ. Give me the things I will need for today and search my heart for anything that displeases you. Make me aware of my failings and lead me into a better understanding of your word. Forgive me for my offenses. I forgive those who have offended me. Deliver me from trouble as I seek your holy presence. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
