What does serving God mean? How can we live a life of service to our heavenly Father? First, serving God means living in accordance with his word and will. To do this, we must study his word and seek him in prayer. Fortunately, the word of God is readily available. Also, his word is written on our hearts and discernible in our conscience.
God made each of us in his image. Consequently, we inherently understand the difference between right and wrong. It is our sinful nature that causes us to stray from serving God. Although we know to do the right thing, temptation creeps into our lives and we sometimes sin.
Even Christ endured temptation. However, unlike you and I Jesus never gave in to worldly desires. Instead, He persisted in serving God. When tempted by Satan to worship him in exchange for all the kingdoms of the world Christ resisted and refused. He said to our adversary in Luke 4:8, “Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’ WEB”
Jesus understood the supreme importance of serving God above all else. The Lord taught us in Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and Mammon. WEB”
