What is the importance of seeking God? As the Creator of all things, there is no more important figure than God. There is no being more worthy of our worship. God created us to worship him. When we fail to seek him, we substitute something else in his place. Without God in our lives, we tend to idolize lesser things, corrupt things.
God commands in Exodus 20:3, “You shall have no other gods before me. WEB” Disorder arises when we place higher value on lesser beings or material things in place of God. Seeking material wealth or idolizing other persons, we corrupt our own understanding of right and wrong. God is the foundation of good values, right thinking, and proper action.
Jesus warned against seeking material things before seeking God. The Lord said in Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and Mammon. WEB”
Our Savior encourages us to put things in their proper order. For example, concerning our material needs Jesus said Matthew 6:33, “But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well. WEB” God is the source of our eternal salvation in Christ. Without seeking God first, we risk losing our eternal souls in pursuit of temporary satisfaction. As Christ said in Mark 8:36, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? KJV”
