What is salvation? In worldly terms, salvation is deliverance from harm or destruction. In this sense, King David credited God with delivering him from his enemies. He wrote of God in Psalm 18:50, “He gives great deliverance to his king, and shows loving kindness to his anointed, to David and to his offspring, forever more. WEB”
David praised God for delivering him from his enemies and the murderous intentions of Saul. In 2 Samuel 22:1-3 we read, “David sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: ‘The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior. From violent people you save me.’ NIV”
For Christians, salvation is deliverance from a specific type of danger. It is deliverance from sin and its consequences. For believers in Christ, salvation from sin and eternal judgment comes by faith in Jesus Christ. We receive God’s saving grace through faith in Christ and his atoning sacrifice on the cross.
Our salvation in Christ is the Good News recorded in the New Testament. Acts 4:12 states of Jesus, “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved! WEB” It is Jesus, God in the flesh, who saved us from our sins. He is our Savior.
