So then, let’s follow after things which make for peace, and things by which we may build one another up. Romans 14:19 WEB
In Romans 14, Paul discusses things that cause conflict among those who have faith. He begins the chapter with an example of a man who has faith to eat anything. He compared the man to one who has weak faith and only eats vegetables. Paul asked that the faithful not judge based on superficial things like food choices. Instead, he encouraged the followers of Christ to build one another up.
Whether we eat certain foods or observe certain days, we live and die for the Lord. Paul wants us to understand that these issues lead to conflict. However, they do not have to. If we choose to respect the practices of others, we do not need to judge one another for our minor differences.
Not Judging One Another
Later in the chapter, Paul writes in Romans 14:13, “Therefore let’s not judge one another anymore, but judge this rather, that no man put a stumbling block in his brother’s way, or an occasion for falling. WEB” The apostle wants us to focus on the things of God in preparation for standing in the presence of the Lord and giving an account of our own lives.
Beyond that, Paul asks that we do not do things that cause our brother or sister to stumble. In other words, if our brother does not eat meat but we do, then we should respect him and not make an issue of food in our interaction with him. The point is to keep peace. As Paul says in Romans 14:17, “for God’s Kingdom is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. WEB”
And so, Paul encourages the faithful to build one another up. He asks that we follow the things that make for peace. Rather than being in conflict over minor issues, as Christians, we overlook minor matters to focus on the important issues of salvation, right standing with God, and service to the kingdom of heaven.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the peace that comes from faith in Jesus Christ. Help me to serve you without causing my brother or sister to stumble. While we build one another up, give me wisdom to do your will here on earth. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
