Believing in Prayer

Believing in Prayer

All things, whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive. Matthew 21:22 WEB

God’s power is limitless and the promise that is made in this passage is an example of that. Christ encouraged his disciples to understand the importance of believing in prayer. The Lord taught his faithful that everything they ask of God in faith they will receive. Does this mean we can ask for anything? Does this mean that God is required to give us everything we want?

This passage in Matthew indicates that God can do anything for those believing in prayer that is within his will. Jesus healed the sick, walked on water, fed the hungry and ultimately rose from the dead. Everything Christ did was good and a demonstration of God’s power working through him.

The key to receiving good things from God is faith or belief. What we ask in faithful prayer must be in accordance with the will of God. God is not obligated to do anything that is contrary to his nature.

There Is Power in Words

The statement being discussed was preceded by an incident with a fig tree. Christ had cursed the tree and said that it would never bear fruit again. Following that, the tree withered. Jesus had so much power and faith that his words destroyed a fig tree. Certainly, he did this to demonstrate his authority.

We should be careful what we say. Words can be destructive. Christ told his disciples that if they had faith and did not doubt, they could tell a mountain to throw itself into the sea and it would happen.

From this story, we understand that with faith we can receive what others might call impossible. It is important to believe in prayer. Of course, God will not respond in a positive manner to a request that is selfish or evil. Almighty God will answer our faithful prayers in accordance with his will when we do not doubt.

Prayer: “Father God, guide me in your word and lead me into greater faith. Teach me your way and help me do what is pleasing to you. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
