Before a Fall

Before a Fall

Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18 KJV

This famous verse about what happens before a fall gives an understanding of what not to do if we want to live lives that are pleasing to the Lord. Pride makes us feel self-sufficient and leads us away from the Lord. It removes us from humility and disconnects us from seeking the wise counsel of others. Before a fall, we sometimes feel a bit self-satisfied and cause ourselves to stumble. Or worse, we become arrogant and pride leads to disaster. This was Satan’s great flaw before his fall. Though only an angel, he thought he should be held in the highest regard like God himself.

A Humble Heart and Spirit

We learn in James 4:6, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. WEB” A humble heart and a humble spirit are Godly characteristics. Jesus said in Matthew 11:29, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. NIV” To be like Christ, we are to be humble and not proud. Though he loves us, the lord will correct us. When we are proud, God actively opposes us.

Proverbs 6:16-19 give a great understanding of what displeases God stating, “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. KJV” When we commit these scriptures to our hearts, and apply them to our lives, we are better prepared to live lives that please God.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your written word. I humble myself before you and praise your holy name. Prepare my mind to understand your word and give me wisdom to live within your will in all situations. Deliver me from the temptation to feel pride as I give you the glory for all good things in my life. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
