And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body, and be thankful. Colossians 3:15 WEB
As Christians, God adopts us to his holy family of chosen people. In his letter to the Colossians, Paul gives instruction on emulating the positive traits of Christ. He instructs the readers to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Further, Paul directs the faithful to bear with one another with forgiveness and above all else, love.
The apostle adds to this list of virtues the two traits we read from Colossians 3:15, peace, and thankfulness. Philippians 4:6-7 emphasizes these qualities also saying, “In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. WEB”
Called to Live in Peace
We are called to live in peace with one another receiving that peace from the blood of Christ on the cross. Jesus won the victory over sin and death making peace for us with God. It is important to note that this is not the peace of “good feelings.” This is the peace that comes from no longer being at odds with God. In addition, it is the peace that comes from working in unity with the other members of the body of Christ.
The scripture also declares the mindset of living in gratitude. We are thankful because we have received salvation through the grace of God. Because of our new relationship of established peace with our loving and forgiving Father, we are thankful. Also, we are thankful for the love and support of our family in the body of Christ.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the gift of salvation. Help me to fully experience the perfect peace that comes from the victory Christ won on the cross. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
