Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 NIV
With all of the trouble we encounter in the world, it is easy to get discouraged when we take our focus off of God. When things aren’t going our way, sometimes fear takes the place of faith, and we fail to live with strength and courage. However, God commands us to be strong and courageous.
In the New Testament, we read in 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. WEB” Whenever we need strength or encouragement, we find these things in prayer and in the word of God. As David says in Psalms 28:7, “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore, my heart greatly rejoices; and with my song will I praise him. KJV”
Keep My Commandments
Showing strength and courage demonstrates our faith. It shows our belief in God’s providence and protection. Also, it proves our love for the Lord. As Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commandments. WEB” And so, it is important that we demonstrate our faith and love by keeping the command to be strong and courageous.
The Lord is with us wherever we go. When we remember this, it is easier to be courageous. The command referenced in the Book of Joshua originates from Deuteronomy 31:6, which says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. NIV” As the scripture says, we can count on God to be with us and to protect us always.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your divine protection. I trust you. Increase my strength and wisdom as I serve your purpose. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
