Be an Example

Be an Example

Let no man despise your youth; but be an example to those who believe, in word, in your way of life, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12 WEB

Although selected by the church elders to lead and probably in his early thirties at the time, Timothy experienced challenges in his ministry and some insecurity because of his youth. Paul addresses this directly saying, “let no man despise your youth.” The apostle offers guidance to Timothy, encouraging him to be an example to the faithful in word, way of life, love, spirit, faith, and purity.

This is good advice for leaders of any age. Paul’s mentorship of Timothy is particularly touching because it demonstrates his love and concern for the young minister. Taking time to direct and encourage Timothy, Paul is demonstrating his leadership ability. In turn, through Paul’s patience, thoughtful advice, and love, Timothy was in the process of learning how to lead more effectively.

Be Diligent

In the verses that follow, Paul directs Timothy to devote himself to publicly reading the scripture, to preach and teach the word of God. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 4:15, “Be diligent in these things. Give yourself wholly to them, that your progress may be revealed to all. WEB”

Over time and with effort, each of us grow in capacity and mature in understanding. The same is true for church leadership. In response to the challenge of his youth, Paul fostered Timothy’s development, not by criticism, but rather by encouraging the faithful execution of his role in sharing the truth of God and the gospel message.

Paul’s approach to addressing the issue of Timothy’s inexperience is key in understanding the effectiveness of the advice. Guiding Timothy to “be an example,” Paul teaches Timothy the most effective way to lead others. That is, of course, by demonstrating desired behavior in daily life or simply stated, to lead by example.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your holy word. Help me to be an example of your righteousness. Give me strength and wisdom to live according to your will and purpose. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
