not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:25 WEB
In this chapter of Hebrews, Paul writes about entering the temple with confidence. He encourages the faithful to come together in support of one another as they mature in their relationship with God. Forgiven of sin by the blood of Jesus Christ, Paul urges believers to enter God’s house with confidence.
As Was His Custom
Jesus made a habit of going to the house of God. Upon returning to his hometown of Nazareth, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath. Luke 4:16 records this event saying, “He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. WEB”
Paul inspires the Hebrews to follow the same pattern of behavior. It is important that we spend time with our brothers and sisters of faith. It’s important that we follow the example of Jesus.
The apostle’s words, “not forsaking our own assembling together” suggests that some members abandoned the congregation failing to recognize the significance of their attendance. This delays development by lack of good examples. We cannot inspire others or be inspired to love and do good works when not present.
Together we share more than the gospel message. We also share one another’s burdens. Believers encourage each other. Fellowship sharpens our understanding and helps to develop our faith through hearing the word of God. We gently correct and guide our friends and even sometimes assist in daily living when we come together.
There I Am
The Lord makes a promise about our assembly saying in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. KJV” From these words, we understand that Christ wants us to be in fellowship with one another.
Jesus is the light of the world. As he says in John 8:12, “Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness but will have the light of life. WEB” Assembling together, we experience the presence of the light of Jesus Christ.
Paul’s words, “exhorting one another” mean to encourage fellow Christians. His words, “as you see the Day approaching” suggest an increased need of support and encouragement in the days leading up to the return of Christ. In other words, coming together to support and encourage one another becomes more important with time.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for my fellow believers. Give every believer many friends in Christ. When assembling together and whenever we are alone, help us to develop in your word. Bring us closer to you and to one another. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
