Always Be Ready

Always Be Ready

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear, having a good conscience. Thus, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be disappointed who curse your good way of life in Christ. 1 Peter 3:15-16 WEB

The apostle Peter tells us in chapter three of his first epistle to always be ready to answer when questioned about our hope in Jesus Christ. To faithfully do this, to always be ready, we must study the word of God and present reasonable explanations of why we believe in Christ. In addition to encouraging maturity in our understanding and presentation of the gospel message, Peter directs the reader to share our beliefs with modesty and respect.

Bless Those That Curse You

Quoting a psalm of David, the apostle writes in 1 Peter 3:11, “Let him turn away from evil and do good. Let him seek peace and pursue it. WEB” As Paul points out in his letter to the Galatians, there is no law against doing good to others. Peter echoes this point in his letter, indicating that imitating goodness will largely protect us from harm. As Jesus says in Luke 6:28, “bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you. WEB”

However, Peter does mention that if the faithful should suffer for righteousness, we are blessed. We are blessed because we serve our Father in heaven. We are blessed because we have received eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. As the Lord said in Matthew 10:28, “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. KJV” We submit to God and not mere men.

The Good News

Peter encourages us to always be ready to answer the question of why we believe in Christ because he knows that this is the most common challenge to our faith. It is also a great opportunity to share the truth of the word of God and win souls to the kingdom. Respond to the challenge by doing what Jesus commanded in Mark 16:15, “Go into all the world, and preach the Good News to the whole creation. WEB”

Following this command, we submit to the will of God, boldly proclaim the gospel message of salvation through faith in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. When someone challenges your belief, consider it a joyful occasion, and share your testimony with gentleness and respect. You have been given the gift of an opportunity to share your faith. Be prepared to answer with the truth of the good news of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the gift of salvation. Thank you for the opportunities I get to share the truth of your holy word. Give me wisdom and understanding. Help me to always be ready and effective when sharing your word with the world. In Jesus name – Amen”
