Alone

Alone

And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. Genesis 2:18 KJV

Up to this point in the story of creation, Genesis reports that God saw everything he made as good or very good. This is the first instance where God identified something as not good. The Lord said that it was not good for Adam to be alone. To ensure that the first man would not be alone, God created a female to be his companion.

Scripture teaches that we are made in the image of God. As we read in Genesis 1:27-28, “God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them. God said to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’ WEB”

One Flesh

Like God, man desires relationships, communion, and fellowship. For a brief time, the man was alone. But God’s plan from the beginning was to create male and female to live in union with one another, produce offspring, and overcome the earth.

Jesus affirms this in Matthew 19:4-5 as he says, ‘“Haven’t you read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh?’ WEB” With these words, Jesus referenced Genesis 1:27 and Genesis 2:24.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you that I am not alone. You are always with me. Thank you for the encouraging words recorded in your holy scripture. Guide me with the wisdom of your word and Spirit. Help me to be more like you. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
