God said, “Let the earth yield grass, herbs yielding seeds, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with their seeds in it, on the earth;” and it was so. Genesis 1:11 WEB
In the Genesis account of creation, this is a part of the Lord’s creative work on the third day. Previously, On the first day, God created the heavens and the earth. In addition, the Lord called light into existence. On day two of creation, our heavenly Father created the atmosphere of the earth calling it heaven. The air we breathe is the portion of heaven referred to in Revelation 21:1 which says, “I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth have passed away, and the sea is no more. As stated, the creation of grass, herbs, and fruit trees referred to in verse eleven happened on day three. This is the first time the bible mentions God creating life. Before bringing animals into existence after their kind, God created seed bearing vegetation that reproduced after their kind. The creation of vegetation at this stage is the logical, natural expression of life after dry ground emerged from the waters that once covered the earth.
Made Through Him
But, what is the significance of life reproducing life from seed after their kind? It is the recurring divine circumstance of the Lord’s providence. Creating unique forms of life that reproduce on their own, God set in motion a process that would sustain all of life to come. Although fruits and plants die, through their seed they live on through the millenia. This created the lush, fresh, beautiful landscape of the earth that is able to sustain higher forms of life. It is these seed bearing herbs and fruits that are the first foods consumed by both animals and man.
The Word of God, Jesus Christ, was the agent of creation. As we read in John 1:1-3, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him. Without him, nothing was made that has been made. WEB” As man is made in the image of God, the plants and animals of this earth follow the divine blueprint of God reproducing after their kind.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the biblical account of the creation. Thank you for providing for my needs. Guide me with your wisdom. Help me to serve your kingdom here on earth. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
