Abomination

Abomination

Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. Leviticus 18:22 KJV

This controversial scripture prohibiting men from having sex with one another comes from the Old Testament law of Moses. The Lord created us to exercise dominion over the earth. Additionally, he created mankind to live within a hierarchy. As we read in 1 Corinthians 11:3, “But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. WEB”

In addition, God commands men and women to come together to subdue the earth. This is recorded in Genesis 1:28 which says, “God blessed them. God said to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’ WEB”

Love Your Enemies

When living according to the laws of men, we do what is permitted by the society in which we live. However, when devoted to God, we do what is commanded by God. Of course, God’s law requires that we love one another. In fact Jesus commands that we love even our enemies. As  the Lord said in Matthew 5:44-45, “I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you, that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. WEB”

Therefore, if I say that a certain behavior is an abomination, I will offend practitioners of that behavior. But if I follow the Lord who says a certain behavior is an abomination, I must agree that the behavior in question displeases the Lord. It is easy to understand that two men who engage in sexual gratification do so fruitlessly because they cannot produce offspring.

One Flesh

We do well to love those who disagree with us as the law of God commands. And still, the bible teaches that the self gratification of men engaging in sex with one another is disgusting, an abomination. The God of the bible prohibits such unions. It violates the highest purpose of sexual intercourse which is to perpetuate life through the creation of new life.

The lesser motivation for sex is simple gratification. In all forms, the word of God prohibits this outside of marriage. Marriage is defined in Genesis 2:24. Jesus quotes this when discussing marriage in Matthew 19:5 saying, “For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. WEB” Fortunately for fallen men, the abomination of sexual sin is forgivable, like all other sins, through repentance and God’s grace in Jesus Christ.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the clarity of your holy word. Thank you for forgiving my sins as I repented and turned to you. Give me wisdom to share your word with the world. Help me to live according to your will. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
