There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death. Proverbs 14:12 WEB
This proverb of Solomon is repeated again in Proverbs 16:25. Whether this is from compiling different lists of proverbs or because of the desirability of repetition in learning is not known. It is, however, interesting to note that many bible passages relate to the simple but profound statement, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death. WEB”
The bible contains many warnings of disaster that follows from trusting in human reasoning rather than relying on the word of God. Man is corrupt by nature. We read in Jeremiah 17:9, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it? WEB”
Knowing the fallibility of the human heart, the bible teaches in Proverbs 3:5-7, “ Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. KJV”
Every Man Needs Forgiveness
These words are consistent with the teaching of Christ and his purpose as a sacrifice for our salvation. Every man is in need of forgiveness. In each of our lives, there are things we have done that offend God. In other words, there is a way that seems right to us that leads to destruction.
Paul writes in Romans 3:23, “for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God. WEB” Also the bible teaches that the wages of sin is death. Because we are all sinners, we need to repent from our sinful nature. The bible teaches us of God’s willingness to forgive in 1 John 1:9 saying, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. WEB”
Jesus says in Luke 5:32, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. WEB” Living in sin, we are deceived to follow our own corrupt ways rather than live in obedience to the righteousness of God. Any sinful lifestyle is a way which seems right to some but in the end leads to death.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for making clear that there is a way that seems right that leads to destruction. Thank you for the correction and wisdom in your holy word. Forgive me for my sins. Lead me according to your will. Help me to be obedient to your will. In Jesus’ name – Amen
