A Sacrifice of Praise

A Sacrifice of Praise

Through him, then, let’s offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which proclaim allegiance to his name. Hebrews 13:15 WEB

In his letter to the Hebrews, Paul discusses how God instructs his people. The opening chapter mentions the prophets of old and makes the important point that the most recent revelation of God’s will comes from the words of Jesus Christ.

The scripture we study today is a reference to the words of Asaph from Psalm 50:23 which reads, “Whoever offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving (a sacrifice of praise) glorifies me, and prepares his way so that I will show God’s salvation to him. WEB”

Paul’s words are meant to encourage persecuted Jewish Christians. Chapter thirteen begins with the famous lines from Hebrews 13:1-2, “Let brotherly love continue. Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it. WEB”

With this statement, the apostle reminds his readers of the righteous behavior and hospitality that the Christian life requires. Even though they were suffering trials and tribulations, allegiance to the name of God meant that they continue to display the love of God in their lives.

Allegiance to God

Doing good to one another and sharing love with one another is considered a worthy sacrifice. Beyond that, praising God is presented in this letter as a worthwhile sacrifice. In righteous deeds and faith-filled words, we demonstrate allegiance to God. In offering a sacrifice of praise, we show our faith especially in difficult times.

We may be tempted to complain and lose our willingness to show affection and kindness to one another during difficult days. Paul reminds us to hold fast to the faith. He encourages the reader that through Jesus Christ we live in victory, and it is fitting to give a sacrifice of praise to the glory and greatness of God.

Prayer: “Father God, you are my strength and my salvation. Thank you for your mercy and grace. Help me to love as you love. Guide me to do your will at all times. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
