Sacrifices of Joy

For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore, will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord. Psalm 27:5-6 KJV

During the time of King David, there was no temple in Jerusalem. It would be left to David’s son Solomon to build the first temple. And so, David worshiped in a tent that served as God’s tabernacle. He felt safe in that place. David knew that the living God would protect him while in that tent just as he would safeguard a visitor to his house. This is why the great king offered, “sacrifices of joy.”

Temples of the Holy Spirit

As Christians, our bodies are movable temples like the tabernacle David visited. We read in 1 Corinthians 6:19, “Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own. WEB” Our bodies are temples that house the Holy Spirit. We are safe in these temples through the love and protection given by God himself.

Just like David, followers of Christ offer sacrifices of joy singing the praises of the Lord, knowing we are safe from our enemy. We are set upon the rock that is Jesus. Christ is the rock of our salvation. Anchored to him, we should not fear death or sudden loss. We are safe in the presence of the Holy Spirit of God.

Prayer: “Father God, you are holy and true. I trust you with my life and thank you for my salvation. Give me what I will need to do your will today. Guide me and instruct me. I will follow you and live in your house forever offering sacrifices of joy now and always. In Jesus’ name – Amen.”
