seeing that his divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and virtue, 2 Peter 1:3 WEB

This verse is a portion of Peter’s introduction to his second epistle. The letter is addressed to fellow believers. Peter prefaces this statement in 2 Peter 1:2 writing, “Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. WEB” After acknowledging the divine power, glory, and virtue of Christ, Peter gives the reasoning for the example of Christ and the promises of the good things of God. It is so the believer will partake in the divine things of God forsaking the corruption of the world. 

Peter continues in his introduction to encourage godliness and self-control. In short, his message encourages the faithful to persevere in Christ. Celebrating moral excellence, Peter discouraged giving in to the lusts of the world. Referring to the divine power of Jesus, Peter reminds his readers of the life affirming gifts and godliness imparted by the knowledge of Christ.

Christ Strengthens Me

The apostles’ plea to perseverance in the faith is an acknowledgement that without Christ humanity is lost in sin. But, in the divine power of Christ, we can overcome the corruption of the flesh. Through the divine power of our Savior, sin is already defeated. We can persevere in Christ without sin in obedience to the word and will of God. As we read in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. WEB” 

The divine power of Christ comes directly from God. It is all powerful, all knowing, and all present. Jesus revealed his divine authority to his disciples in Matthew 28:18-20 saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. WEB.”
