The Spirit of Truth

The Spirit of Truth

I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever: the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him and doesn’t know him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you. John 14:16-17 WEB

In this powerful message to his disciples, Jesus continues teaching of the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As the Lord prepares his followers for his death and resurrection, Jesus encourages them with the promise of the presence of the Holy Spirit of God within each believer. Jesus calls the Spirit “another Counselor” and “the Spirit of truth.”

Further associating himself with God the Father and the Holy Spirit of God, Christ explains to his followers that they know the Spirit of truth as he lives among them. With these words, Christ directly refers to himself as an example of the Spirit of truth. Since Christ ascended into heaven, at Jesus’ request, God sends the Holy Spirit to dwell in each believer.

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit of God, the Spirit of truth, lives inside those who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. He convicts us of our sin and encourages us to live godly lives. The Holy Spirit guides repentant sinners in obedience to the will of God. The Holy Spirit promotes service to the kingdom of heaven and living life with kindness and love.

The Spirit of truth leads believers in the love of God. The Spirit reminds us of the service, teaching and sacrifice of Christ. Following the guidance of the Spirit of truth, we produce fruit for the kingdom of heaven. The apostle Paul described the fruits of the Holy Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 writing, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. WEB”

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the Spirit of truth. Thank you for the guidance I receive from your Holy Spirit. Without you I am a lost sinner. Help me to live a life that honors the sacrifice Christ made to redeem mankind from sin. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
