Put on the New Man

Put on the New Man

and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth. Ephesians 4:24 WEB

In chapter four of his letter to the Ephesians, Paul begins focusing on unity and maturity in the body of Christ. He then shifts to instructions for Christian living. In contrast to the old sinful self, Paul instructs the reader to put on the new man. The old sinful man is deceptive and corrupt. The new man in Christ is only possible through a personal relationship with our Creator.

Specifically, what this means is that we begin a process of renewing ourselves through knowledge of God to the image in which we are created. We read in Genesis 1:27, “God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them. WEB” We were made in the image of God to think and act according to his purpose but through corruption have fallen away from God’s original intent.

The Old Self Is Corrupt

The old self is corrupt and selfish. As we read in John 8:44, “You are of your father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn’t stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of lies. WEB”

When we put on the new man, we begin to live in obedience to the righteousness of God. This means speaking the truth and refraining from reacting in anger. Also, it means that we reflect the holiness of God in our lives. This has to do with purity. Specifically, Paul mentions only speaking things which build one another up and benefit the listener. He encourages following the example of Jesus in kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for my salvation in Jesus Christ. Thank you for making clear the difference between good and evil. Help me to live a life that is pleasing to you. Help me to conform to your will. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
