Doers of the Word

Doers of the Word

But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. James 1:22 WEB

Christian life is about love and service. And that love is more than the feel good, emotional type. It is an active love of service to others. In accord with this notion, James encourages his readers to put the word of God into practice in their lives. Rather than becoming experts at hearing and repeating the word, James directs us to be doers of the word.

Christ commands us to love one another. In John 13:34 Jesus says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, just like I have loved you; that you also love one another. WEB” Just as Christ fed the hungry, demonstrated forgiveness, and ultimately gave his life for others. As Christians, we follow his example.

With enthusiasm, we receive the word. Through study and practice of the word, we seek to mature in our understanding. In addition, we actively share the truth of the gospel message with others. As we read another command of Christ in Mark 16:15, “He said to them, “Go into all the world, and preach the Good News to the whole creation. WEB” Beyond hearing, we actively share the word of God with others and establish its practical application in our daily lives.

Faith and Obedience

The word of God is like a roadmap to eternal life in heaven. We are meant to read the map and use it for guidance on our journey to our heavenly home. When we allow the word of God to direct our steps, we demonstrate the faith we have in the accuracy of the map. As doers of the word, we prove our faith and obedience to the will of God.

Merely hearing the word and agreeing, simply listening and nodding our heads is not enough. Though saved by faith through the grace of God, we prove our faith through submission to the will of God and active service to his kingdom. Our actions cannot save us but as we read in James 2:26, “For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead. WEB”

Prayer, “Father God, thank you for the example of how to live a life that is pleasing to you. Thank you for the truth of your holy word. Guide my steps as I seek to do your will. Help me to be one of the doers of the word and not only a listener. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
