Rejoice in Our Sufferings

Rejoice in Our Sufferings

Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 5:3–5 WEB

In this letter, Paul discusses the benefits of being declared righteous through the blood of Jesus Christ. We live in God’s grace and rejoice in the promise of hope that we will share in the glory of Jesus. In this passage, we learn to rejoice in our sufferings as suffering brings growth. The Lord proved his love for us. Undeserving offenders, Jesus died to pay for our sins. As Christians, we are at peace with God.

The Ability to Endure

It is difficult to believe that suffering serves a good purpose. But suffering produces the ability to endure. Endurance produces character and the development of character gives us hope. This is why we rejoice in our sufferings. As Paul writes, “hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. WEB”

We will suffer in this world. As Jesus said in John 16:33, “I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble; but cheer up! I have overcome the world. WEB” The trouble of this world is temporary. The hope that we have in Christ sustains us and is permanent. Our faith is in Christ who gives us eternal life in heaven where there is no suffering.

Problems give us an opportunity to trust God at a deeper level. Paul teaches to rejoice in our sufferings because when we suffer, we rely even more on God and draw closer to him in times of trouble. No one avoids pain in this world, but Christians have the support of one another. We have the support of God, and the promise of eternal life in heaven.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your presence in all things. Thank you for the truth of Jesus Christ. Give me what I will need for the day and lead me to do your will as I resist the temptations of this world. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
