Greater Works

Greater Works

Most certainly I tell you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and he will do greater works than these, because I am going to my Father. John 14:12 WEB

In chapter fourteen of John’s gospel, Jesus prepared his disciples to accept the truth of his divinity. As his suffering on the cross drew near, Jesus directly addressed his departure and subsequent resurrection. The Lord said in John 14:18-20, “I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more; but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. WEB”

Preparing his disciples to accept him as they accept God himself, Jesus promised his disciples a place in heaven. Jesus said in John 14:1-3, “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also. WEB”

In Jesus’ Name

Further, Jesus makes an astonishing assertion. The Lord proclaims that his followers would do greater works than his own. The works Jesus refers to here are miracles. Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead, walked on water and so many other things. And yet, Jesus promises that his believers would do the very same works that he performed. More than that, Jesus said his followers would perform greater works.

With Christ returning to the Father in Glory, Jesus directly intercedes with our heavenly Father on our behalf. In service to the Kingdom of Heaven, the faithful live in obedience to the word and will of God. In addition, the faithful perform greater works in the name of Jesus Christ. As the Lord pledged his unfailing support to the faithful he said in John 14:13-15, “Whatever you will ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it. If you love me, keep my commandments. WEB”

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the encouragement of your holy word. Thank you for the life I have in Christ. Guide me to serve your purpose. Help me to do greater works in your service. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
